Curriculum Overview – Year 7
Our philosophy in Modern Languages revolves around teaching students to effectively communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas in the target language. In Year 7, students study either French or Spanish. We give them the foundaitons of the language throughout this year. By the end of the year, students are able to communicate basic information and opinions on five topic areas: basic introductions, talking about themseles, school, free time and where I live. Throughout the year, students are assessed on the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Curriculum Overview – Year 8
In Year 8, students continue to study the same language as in Year 7. We build up their range of vocabulary and teach them to communicate in at least three different tenses. By the end of the year students will be able to talk about five different topic areas: holidays, media, tourism, my identity and my home. Throughout the year, students are assessed on the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Curriculum Overview – Year 9
In Year 9, students have chosen to study a language at GCSE level. Where possible, students should choose to study the same language as they did in key stage 3. We also offer students the opportunity to study both languages, if they wish. The first year of GCSE builds on the vocabulary and grammar learned in key stage 3. Students will study five topics: family and relationships, going out, health, leisure and young people. Students develop their communication skills and learn to produce longer, more complex language. At the end of each topic, students use the knowledge they have gained to answer a set of speaking test questions which will be used in the Year 10 mocks and in the final speaking examination in Year 11. Throughout the year, students are assessed on the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Curriculum Overview – Year 10
In our second year of GCSE, we continue to develop our communication skills, understanding and producing longer and more complex language. Students build on another five topics that they have previously seen at key stage 3: holidays, school, work experience, tourism and festivals. At the end of each topic, students use the knowledge they have gained to answer a set of speaking test questions which will be used in the mocks and in the final speaking examination in Year 11. Throughout the year, students are assessed on the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Curriculum Overview – Year 11
In our final year of GCSE, students study two topics: work and future plans and the environment. These topics are studied in Year 11 as they tend to suit students’ interests and levels of maturity. We finish the year by revising all of the GCSE topics before students sit their final examinations in the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are two points throughout the year for students to complete mock examinations.
