Curriculum Overview – Year 7
In Year 7, we follow the national curriculum to teach students the core areas of Maths. These are; Algebra, Number, Probability, Statistics, Ratio and Proportion, Geometry and Measures. Students will compete a series of modules which will be tailored to the ability of the learner. Students are encouraged to develop understanding and reasoning through discussions and activities designed to promote thinking. We ensure challenge is set through depth of the topic rather than new topics. Alongside this, there are regular assessments, testing students on the areas they have learnt throughout the year. We also enhance learning through student’s participation in the UK Maths Challenge.
Curriculum Overview – Year 8
In Year 8, students will continue to learn through modules which reflect those taught in Year 7 allowing for sequential learning and progression for more in depth topics to be delivered further. We follow the national curriculum to ensure core areas of Maths are covered in preparation for GCSE.
Curriculum Overview – Year 9
In Year 9, students begin the GCSE OCR course. Throughout the three years leading to Year 11, students will complete a series of modules which will be tailored to the ability of learners. The topics covered are based on the National Curriculum and OCR framework, these include: number, shape, algebra, ratio and proportion and rates of change, geometry measures, probability and statistics. We aim to build on the methods and techniques learnt in KS3, whilst also introducing new topics from the GCSE specification in order to prepare them for future learning. Alongside this, there will be regular assessments on the areas students will have learnt throughout the course. We also enhance learning through student’s participation in the UK Maths Challenge.
Curriculum Overview – Year 10
In Year 10, students start their second year of the Maths GCSE course, the modules which are delivered in Year 10 reflect those taught in Year 9 allowing for sequential learning and progression for more in depth topics to be delivered further. The sequencing of the Year 10 curriculum supports students’ learning by building on prior knowledge and skills and the curriculum from Year 9 – 11 provides students with the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful with subsequent mathematical concepts. We aim to build sequential learning and embed the key skills of fluency, mathematical reasoning and solving problems throughout. Alongside this, there will be regular assessments, testing students on their knowledge and understanding of the course. We also enhance learning through student’s participation in the UK Maths Challenge.
Curriculum Overview – Year 11
In Year 11, students complete the final module stage in line with the Maths curriculum at GCSE. As in Years 9 and 10, the Year 11 scheme is designed to provide sequential learning and embed the key skills of fluency, mathematical reasoning and solving problems. This allows learners to understand, develop and master their skills that will challenge, motivate and engage them, whilst also providing the opportunity to prepare them for the new content that has been implemented into the GCSE course and further those who progress onto A level. Therefore, this year focuses on ensuring students are confident and prepared for their GCSE exams with regular assessments testing them on the areas they will have visited throughout the course. This will prepare them to be able to use their maths skills in life after their GCSEs.
