Learning Support

St. Bernard's is a school which welcomes and celebrates its differences. We expect all of our students to show tolerance, respect and care for one another irrespective of race, gender, religion or ability.

The Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) department at St Bernard’s Catholic High aims to support students with SEND to become independent, productive and happy members of our school and the wider community. We work with curriculum areas and individual members of staff to develop appropriate lesson content and delivery styles to meet the needs of our learners.

We have a team of Student Support Assistants who are largely attached to specific curriculum areas giving them an expertise in those areas. This is particularly effective for teaching staff planning and developing lessons as they can work as a team with SSAs. It also means that when students attend homework club SSAs are able to offer assistance in all subjects utilising their subject knowledge.

There are two stages of SEND and a monitoring stage:
Monitoring: Students’ needs are met within the classroom. K: Students’ needs are met within the classroom plus support is offered from outside agencies. Statement of Educational Need or Education Health Care Plan: A legal document drawn up by the local authority specifying what actions need to be taken by school to meet the needs of the student.

Since September 2014 there have been changes to the way special needs and disability are managed following implementation of the new Children and Families Bill.
